Rising 300 feet above the West Campus neighborhood of the University of Texas at Austin, The Icon is more than just a student housing complex—it’s a statement of contemporary design and innovation. Among the standout design elements in this state-of-the-art tower is the use of Luminux ceiling panels across three key floors of the building. The result? A dramatic, yet functional ceiling solution that blends beauty, durability, and performance.

Lightweight, Reflective, and Limitless

Originally, designers at Rhode Partners considered antique gold mirrored glass for the ceiling tiles. While visually compelling, glass proved too heavy for the existing ceiling grid system. The solution came from Bryer Construction & Installation LLC (BCI), led by Lucas Bryer and Edgar Ayala, project manager, BCI introduced the design team to Luminux panels—mirror-like, printable aluminum surfaces that are 10x lighter than ¼” glass and virtually unbreakable.

By laminating 2’x2’ Luminux panels to a ½” substrate, BCI created ceiling tiles that were not only easy to install but also customizable to the project's aesthetic needs. “We chose Luminux because unlike glass, it won’t crack during transport or installation, and being lighweight, it was much easier to handle” noted Bryer. “Plus, we could meet the client’s design requirement of 60% custom gold coverage on each tile.”
